A lesson plan

Visiting Belgium

Aims of the lesson

- to develop students' speaking skills

- to develop students' writing skills (to practise writing a postcard)

- to practise using the Past Simple Tense

- to practise the expressions of sequence

- to get students familiar with the culture of Belgium

1. Warm-up

Teacher introduces the topic of the lesson. T asks the SS to write down all the words that come into their mind when they think of Belgium. Then they have to read aloud their lists of words. T also asks if there is any place in Belgium they would like to visit.

2. Group work

Students are divided into groups. Each group gets some pictures depicting some of the most famous places in Belgium. They also get some information about the places. SS have to match the pieces of information with the pictures. Two of the students that took part in the trip walk around the classroom and help the rest of the students.

3.Group work

In the next stage of the lesson ss are encouraged to read very carefully all the information about the places in the pictures in their groups. They have to try to remember as much as possible. Then teacher collects the information and leaves only pictures. Each group presents their pictures trying to tell something about the place they can see in the pictures.

4. Group work

SS have to guess the plan of the trip. Each group has to present the plans they have worked out and the group closest to the original plan of the trip to Belgium wins. T encourages students to use the expressions of sequence such as first, then, after that, afterwards, finally...etc.

5. Writing a postcard

SS have to imagine they are visiting Belgium and they have to write a postcard to their friends. They have to include the following information: the weather conditions, people they met in this country as well as a short description of the place they are staying in.
